Cloth-backed, glazed pictorial boards, titled in gilt on spine; xx,289pp; errata slip; 43 unnumbered leaves of photographic plates (gravures); 11 inserted maps and plans, several double-page and including the large folded map of "Guatemala and the Adjacent Countries;" numerous text illustrations in gravure and line. Covers slightly toned, rubbed, and soiled, with wear to boards at edges and corners, but still a tight, easily Very Good copy, with the text very fresh and crisp, free of internal markings. Attractive copy of this lavishly-produced book, illustrated throughout with gravure reproductions of photographs by the authors as well as chromolithographed plates and dozens of photographic text illustrations. British archaeologist Alfred Percival Maudslay (1850-1931) pioneered the excavation of Mayan sites in Guatemala, work that would be memorialized in his five-volume magnum opus, "Biologia Centrali-Americana," published over several years from 1889 to 1902. The current title, directed to a lay audience, documents fieldwork conducted by Maudlay and his wife Anne Cary Maudslay (née Morris) in 1894, with excellent documentation of Chichen Itzá, Palenque, Tikál and several other sites.
