8vo. A little rubbed but very good in the original red pebbled cloth, 320pp. Complete with 20 maps and illustrations. Hester Needham's (1843-1897) book is the only one known to have been written by a female missionary to Indonesia during the nineteenth century. She landed at Sibolga in December 1889 and proceeded to the missionary station at Pansur Napitu in North Sumatra, north of Padangsidempuan. Her work was with the Batak people whose language she learned and helped to translate the Bible into Batak. She concentrated on the poor, the blind and lepers. In the spring of 1892 several earthquakes hit Sangir Island and she contributed a great deal to the relief efforts. In 1895, Needham moved to territory of the Mandailing people and settled at Muara Sipongi and later to Maga where she died.
