First edition of the author's iconic novel. Assumed to be first edition, first printing (as no reference to second printing etc - see relevant image). Condition (external): understated black cloth covers with silver gilt titles at the head and tail of the spine - including of the publisher's reading mermaid colophon. Slight edgewear in places, plus an occasional scuff mark. Tight binding. Condition (internal): there is a generally mild level of tanning throughout but not enough to impact on the clarity of the text. The preliminary and final papers show a degree more tanning - see images. pp. 567. 8vo.
