About this Item
pp. vii, 341. Small 8vo. Bound in original brown cloth, ruled and lettered in white to front board and lettered in white to spine. The white to the rules and lettering on the front board has been partially ablated, more so to the spine. There is light edge wear, scuffing and soiling to the cloth. The binding is slightly stressed. Contents clean and tight - no former owner's markings. In good, to good+, condition. No dust jacket. Our copy is a first edition jointly published by Copp, Clark (Toronto) and Cassell (London), with the Copp, Clark name at the base of the spine. Richard Austin Freeman (1862-1943) was trained as a pharmacist and doctor. When he was 25, he joined a British expedition to what was then the Gold Coast of Africa, and served as a physician, naturalist, and navigator. After contracting blackwater fever, he returned to England in 1891 and turned to writing to support himself and his family. His first efforts were co-authored under the pseudonym Clifford Ashdown with author John James Pitcairn. Freeman is better known as a prolific writer of first-rate mysteries, and creator of the medical investigator Dr. John Evelyn Thorndyke, a series character whose work epitomized the use of scientific methods to solve crimes. However, he also wrote a number of very good novels. This title is his first novel (of which he was the sole author) and precedes the first 'Thorndyke' mystery novel by two years. It concerns an adventurous voyage to North Africa in search of the Aboasi gold mine, the theft of a sacred religious relic by a daring Englishman, and his subsequent exploits. Allegedly, this book was once required reading of all who served in the African branch of the British Colonial Services. Seller Inventory # 9900033930
