84 pages. Rare large paper limited edition of 50 hand-numbered copies. With a frontispiece photogravure portrait of the author and his facsimile autograph below. For hundreds of years the only form of golf literature, excluding personal diaries and letters, was in the form poetry or song. In the earliest days of the golfing societies, such golfing 'lays' were often recited after the convivial club dinner, even put to music and sung. Some of Thomson's topics are familiar: golfing advice, caddies, and nocturnal golf dreams, while other poems dwell on favorite courses such as Dornoch, Gullane, and Glasgow. There is an especially nice poem, Epistle to the Captain of the Leven Thistle Golf Club. A scarce work of pre-1900 golf poetry in all original binding; gilt-lettered light tan cloth, top page edges gilt. Upper hinge split less than 1" at extremity otherwise cloth is clean, fresh, and unmarked. Beautifully bright, crisp copy. Endpapers and following page are tanned from pastedown offset, no former owner name or bookplate. Contents without underlining, notations, markings, soiling, staining, foxing, creases, tears or damage of any kind. Prone to cloth decomposition, especially on the spine, this copy is in very good condition. There was also a trade edition of this book published the same year. Covers protected in mylar. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 204152
