London: David Bogue, 1847. Sm. 8vo, [6] 194 [1, ads] pp. With eight illustrations drawn and etched by George Cruikshank. Original publisher's green cloth; gilt spine; gilt vignette on upper cover and blind-stamped vignette on lower cover. Slightly dull but a good sound copy with a red prize bookplate at the front dated 1857. ? First edition. A Christmas fantasy with a solidly Victorian moral about the value of selflessness and humility over material wealth by the Mayhew brothers, journalists and authors of plays, farces, and pamphlets. Henry is now best known as the co-founder of Punch magazine and as the author of the groundbreaking study of urban poverty, London Labour and the London Poor, which published in serial form in the 1840s.
