Item description from seller

The subject of this fascinating historical romance, Gopal Bhar, was for Bengalis a legendary court jester, so smart that he could outwit learned men and Bengali courtiers. This fine narrative is about the problems one encounters in Hindu culture when one attempts to find or choose a soul-mate. A fine and collectible edition of a marvelous book, translated from the original Bengali, being #55 of a small number of copies (750 copies) bound for private circulation only, thus a First Edition Thus. Bound simply in original yellow and blue cloth with paper label to spine, spine head bumped, tips scuffed, mildly worn and soiled exterior. Text clean, tight and free of markings, fore- and bottom-edges rough-cut. Big, tall, Imperial octavo format exemplar. Nirmal A. Das says in his Introduction, "It is not because Hindus are afraid of dealing with actualities of life, but because we do not help our community by exposing the apparently lurid love-life of the country, that esoteric literature has not become popular." Includes ten risque black-and-white line-sketches by Akos D. Hamza. Quite a nice copy. 168 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.…

Store description

Member, I.O.B.A. (the Independent On-line Booksellers Association) "Structure" versus "Agency." A phrase that has characterized much social-scientific debate. Does “structure” (the routinized regulations of kinship and marriage, work and reproduction, of race, class and gender) determine history, or is it the “agency” of fully conscious, independently acting, individuals? Structure, Verses, Agency Books isn’t going to solve the debate, but we’ll offer you lots of all three. Versus to verses—we specialize in fine, rare and collectible books, from the fine arts to the social sciences, from poetry to photography, from literature and ethnography to fine bindings and Americana. Structure, Verses, Agency Books…
