Item description from seller

First edition of J. Paul de Castro's detailed historical study of the Gordon Riots of 1780. London: Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press, 1926. xiv, [2], 279, [1] pp., illustrated with plates, portraits and plans. Original dark blue cloth hardcover with gilt lettering and Oxford University Press device to spine. A sound surviving copy showing general age and shelf wear. Boards rubbed and marked, with wear and fraying at spine ends and corners. Gilt spine lettering remains clear and attractive. Page edges toned and somewhat dusty with age. Endpapers show light spotting and handling marks. Internally generally clean for its age. Some strain/weakness visible around the frontispiece/title-page gutter, but the volume remains intact. No dust jacket. Please see photographs for condition. An uncommon interwar scholarly history of the violent anti-Catholic Gordon Riots that engulfed London in June 1780. De Castro's work remains cited in later scholarship on the riots; a contemporary Spectator review described it as a substantial piece of historical research.
