About this Item
Goze is a unique example of female cooperation in Medieval Japan. Since the Edo era, Goze formed non-profit organizations aimed at supporting and protecting disabled (blind) women to achieve independence and sustain themselves as traveling musicians. They were renowned throughout Japan, especially in rural areas, and were often regarded as shamans. The last Goze passed away in 2005 at the age of 105. Shoko Hashimoto (born 1939) is a prominent Japanese photographer who graduated from Nihon University's College of Art Department of Photography in 1964. He traveled with Goze women across Japan and published a visual travel guide covering all four seasons, beginning with winter. The text in Japanese, written by Norio Osaki, is published as a supplement to the photobook. In 8vo. 24,5x18cm. Unpaginated. Photobook in b&w. Spine with a vertical creasing. Stamped on the bottom edge. Notes in pen on the flyleaf. Paperback. Paper wrappers waved. Original slip case, sunburned. Comes with a supplement. Lacking rare obi. Near fine condition.
