About this Item

Description:

First edition, first printing. [vi], 168, 16 pp. Bound in publisher's dark cloth with white stamping on front and rear boards, spine lettered in gilt. Near Fine with modest wear at spine ends and corners, hardly any rubbing to Beardsley-designed stamping, and two bookseller tickets at front paste down. Former owner's gift inscription at front free endpaper. A very attractive copy. An enduringly-popular cosmic horror novella and precursor to weird fiction inspired by the author's upbringing in the Welsh countryside near the Roman ruins at Caerwent. Viewed as degenerate literature it was condemned as decadent and immoral for its frank depictions of sexuality. It would inspire Bram Stoker's Dracula, Lovecraft's The Dunwich Horror, and works by Clark Ashton Smith and Stephen King. Increasingly uncommon, especially in such lovely shape.
