The very scarce first edition of this late nineteenth century children's work from Mary Louisa Molesworth, who wrote a large number of tales for children under the name Mrs. Molesworth. In contemporary publications, Molesworth was referred to as 'the Jane Austen of the nursery'.Featuring a number of vignette illustrations from popular Victorian era illustrators including Gordon Browne and Maynard Brown.This work tells the tale of two young children and the surprising arrival of their uncle.A small number of these illustrations have been neatly coloured by a previous owner, most concentrated towards the start of the work. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Bumping to spine head and tail, with significant marks and discolouration to boards. Ink stain to head of rear board. Internally, binding somewhat strained to rear of text block. A number of vignette illustrations have been neatly coloured by a previous owner. A number of light handling marks to pages. Good.
