A Near Fine copy in Near Fine dust jacket with light moisture spotting to the front cover a touch of sunning to the edges. Merwin's early subjects were frequently tied to mythological or legendary themes, while many of his poems featured animals. In the mid-fifties, he joined the circle of writers that surrounded Robert Lowell and Merwin decided to seek a more American vernacular. He turned inward, toward more introspective and personal subjects. At this time he also began experimenting with form and irregular metrics.
