About this Item
Unknown: Unknown. Good with no dust jacket. 1910. First Edition Thus. Single Card. Light creasing to corners and edges. Light dust soiling. Photos available 3 By 6 Inches. Greeting Card. ; A humorous greeting card based on the Foxy Grandpa comics of the early 1900s. The card has an old man peaking through a hole in the fence. When you open the first fold, it appears that he is looking at a nude woman, "Hello! Hello! Hello! Well, Well, Well, What's This?", until of course, you open the card and realize that you have been fooled. In the late 1880s Carl Edward Schultze obtained a job on the Chicago News. After doing general newspaper art and cartoon work for a couple of years, Carl Schultze moved to the New York Herald, where he was asked to develop a strip. He introduced his initial concept of a shrewd old man, 'Grandpa'. An assistant editor of the Herald said the old man looked foxy and suggested the full name for the strip. January 7, 1900, 'Foxy Grandpa' was launched. I don't know if the card was actually done by Schultze, or, as Foxy Grandpa was very popular, the cards were done by someone else. The only mark is a letter H inside a circle with 30 after it. See Photos ; Carl Schultze; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 1 pages . whbx 2. Seller Inventory # 048319
