Group of short fiction, poetry and and one essay on censorship by American poet and short story writer Jascha Kessler. from the collection of Barbara & Michael Poe. Born in 1929 in Brooklyn Kessler's career included a professorship of English and Modern Literature at UCLA and translating of poetry and prose from Eastern European languages. He received many honors including the Major Hopwood Award for Poetry from the University of Michigan in 1952, an NEA Fellowship in Writing and three Senior Fulbright awards. Kessler was a Rockefeller Fellow in 1979, was given the California Arts Council Fellowship in Fiction Writing and various awards for translation. He became the first American to receive the Hungarian PEN Club's Memorial Medal in 1979. FICTION: 1. Classical Illusions, McPherson, 1985 - Hardcover with DJ lightly rubbed, small crease at corner of inside flap. 7. To Kolonos. A Tall Tale, Illuminati, 1988 - Illustrated stiff wrappers with light rubbing. 8. Siren Songs & Classical Illusions, McPherson, 1992 [Dedicated and signed on free endpaper] - Stiff wrappers with DJ, rubbed and lightly discolored at spine. POETRY: 9. Whatever Love Declares, Plantin Press, 1969 [Dedicated and signed on half-title] Half cloth over decorative boards, lightly rubbed with very light wear along edges. 10. After the Armies Have Passed, New York University Press, 1970 [Handwritten poem 'Surveyors" on half-title with two lines, date and signature on verso. Excerpt: "So we searched for our lost selves / here in our human desert / where all must live, and all dies / even those old Emperors / who made this forbidden wall / that kept us from the city / the holy city of love"] Typed copy of the poem and short, signed letter to Barbara (Poe) who inspired this poem laid in. Hardcover with DJ, age-toned and price-clipped. 11. In Memory of the Future, Kayak, 1976 [Dedicated and signed on title page] - Illustrated white wrappers, age-toned. ESSAY: 12.
