Growing Up With God: Using Stories to Explore a Child's Faith and Life

Children are innately curious about God. Given a chance, they can ask very provocative questions! Nancy Cocks has spent years listening to the stories children have to tell and the questions they have about God. Tapping into her own childhood memories and imagination, she has written stories to answer these questions and to prompt the kinds of discussions that lead both children and adults to a better understanding of their loving God. Cocks reminds us that stories are a particularly powerful way of transmitting thoughts and ideas, and forging bonds, especially with children. She has spent years researching this process through her Story Project, which, combined with her experience as the minister of a vibrant, child-filled Presbyterian parish, has lead her to an understanding of how to communicate to the heart of what a questioning child wants to know. Part One of Growing Up With God synthesizes extensive research into storytelling by using conversations with children and storytellers to help you do the following: Understand this storytelling model and how it unfolds, Examine the themes of Christian faith at work in the stories and reflections, Listen to children praying in response to stories, and Consider ways to use this material at home, in children's programs and in worship. Part Two presents a treasury of Nancy Cock's tried and true stories - tested through her personal experience and through her Story Project volunteers. Part Three offers a comprehensive index to help readers find stories on various themes, as well as some suggestions on how to follow-up and respond to puzzling questions that arise in conversation about the stories.
