About this Item
Mead's second book, a chronicle of the time she spent studying the "untouched.brown, sea-dwelling Manus people of the Admiralty Islands, north of New Guinea,'' in the late 1920s. As in most of her work, her focus here is on childrearing practices & child development through adolescence, with particular attention to education & the conflict between tribal traditions & the intrusion of Western methods. In 372 pages with Glossary of native terms in rear + glossy photographic frontispiece + 23 internal sepia-toned photos. A FIRST EDITION, first printing, from 1930, this octavo (5.5" x 8.25") has green cloth-covered boards with a maroon stamped palm tree to front & blue lettering to spine. Condition is Good+/VG-: internally quite clean, binding straight & strong, pages white with a modest tanning to edges. Front hinge cracked. Externally, there is heavy rubbing & staining to rear board as well as bleached spots from dampstaining; light dampstaining (approximately 1/4" diagonally) to lower outer corners of most pages & plates. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have!
