"Growth (1924), was a slight work, as he well knew, but it foreshadowed the virtues of his later writings, in its clear and succinct presentation, and in the wide range of material that he brought together. He explained that he was proposing to show what growth is, what it does, and how it does it. An extravagant claim, no doubt, but well in line with the optimism of experimental zoologists at a time when Spemann's work was thought to be revealing the ultimate secret of the regulation of embryonic development" (Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society, Vol. 19, 1973, p. 68).
