A scarce and fascinating guide to the medicinal spring in the market town of Thetford, Norfolk, in its original binding with two folding plates. A first edition of this work by Fredrick Accum. Bound in the original publisher"s quarter leather with illustrated, paper covered boards. Illustrated with two folding plates; a folded aquatint frontispiece, loosely inserted to the title page and another steel engraving firmly bound. Collated, complete. A brilliant guide to the mineral spring at Thetford, including chapters on the ancient history of the Norfolk market town, local amenities such as the post office and available lodgings, instructions on how to take the waters and dated testimonies from local doctors. Chalybeate springs are natural waters containing significant levels of iron salts. They were popular in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries for curing diseases and numerous ailments. The chalybeate spring and Royal Tunbridge Wells is perhaps the most well known. This edition with a publisher"s advertisement page to the rear. Bound in the original publisher"s quarter leather with illustrated, paper covered boards. Externally, worn. With loss to the paper at the upper front board and lesser loss to upper rear joint. Loss to leather at upper and lower spine, cracked at joints but holding firm. Hinge straining at boards but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound with the frontispiece plate loosely inserted.
