Spock was a professor of geology at Washington Square College of Arts and Science, New York University. He was born in London and graduated from Cornell and received his Master's and doctor's degrees in geology at Columbia. He gained valuable field experience with the American Museum of Natural History Central Asiatic expeditions (circa 1920-1930). Spock's Guide to the Study of Rocks has been designed to fill a long-felt need for an authoritative American textbook on petrology.
