Hard Cover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Second Impression. 164 pp, 7 3/8" H. B&w photographs, map. "The story of H.M.S. Wideawake is that of a 'Vee' Class destroyer - a veteran of the last war - from the beginning of hostilities, through the drama of Dunkirk, to the end of 1940. The author has recaptured successfully the outlook held by the majority of us in the early days of war, when we suffered from the Maginot mentality and believed that economic pressure at sea, and the impregnable line of fortresses on the continent, would soon cause Germany to collapse. He describes the monotony and the tremendous difficulties of convoy work, and then shows how the Royal Navy reacted to the smashing of those comfortable beliefs held throughout the country, and wrote imperishable epics in the in the annals of naval history." Prevoius owner's bookplate on front free endpaper, light browning to pages, light to moderate edge wear, two small shallow dents to top of rear board lean to the spine, moderate browning to the edges of the text block. Dust jacket is basically complete, but is worn with very small chips, rubbing, small tears, creases, old tape repairs, darkening to spine and flap-folds - now protected in removable mylar sleeve.
