Neatly extracted from a bound volume and expertly mended. On March 16, 1689, just three weeks after being proclaimed King and Queen, William and Mary gave royal assent to this Act to allow for the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus in England for one month (until April 17, 1689). The law permitted the Privy Council to arrest anyone (excluding members of both Houses of Parliament) that they suspected of high treason and imprison them without bail or trial. The writ of habeas corpus had never before been suspended in England, but the bold move was necessary to address the questionable activities and intentions of those parties and individuals that were still loyal to James II and who posed a danger to the new King and Queen and their administration.
