English-American novelist Arthur Hamilton Gibbs (1888 ? 1964), brother of Cosmo Hamilton & Sir Philip Gibbs, wrote 16 novels and two books of poetry; known for The Persistent Lovers (1915) adapted to film 1922 film under the same title, and Soundings (1925), best-seller in the US. This 1928 historical novel is the story of Michael Gordon and Patricia Wade following World War I. Michael, now a major, left Oxford to Egypt, wounded & sent home from the Darnelles, in Ireland during the Sinn Fein, and was in France for the last 2 years of war where exposure to mustard gas threatened blindness for the remainder of his life, proposes to Pat.
