Reviews
Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.
Wobblies in the Northwest woods, the 1919 Seattle General Strike, Pittsburgh and the Mellons, the Soviet Union, even Cuba and Central America: Jessie and Harvey O'Connor have covered them all as crusading socialist labor journalists. Their joint autobiography gives readers a dual perspective while their disparate backgroundshis working class and hers wealthy but radicaladd to the historical interest. Cynical 1980s readers will be especially interested in the couple's explanations of their own occasional ingenuousness regarding the Soviet Union and jolted by reminders of the terrible state of American civil liberties in that period. For the general reader curious about labor, the Left, journalism, dual careers, and social history.Frieda Shoenberg Rozen, Pennsylvania State Univ., University Park
