Tall octavo, top edge gilt. The first successful ascent of South America's tallest peak, Aconcagua. Good condition with flaking at top of the spine, a smudge on the front board and an old stain at top of the rear board. Large folding map in the rear 'Sketch Map to Illustrate the Route of the Expedition to Aconcagua and Tupungato 1896-7'. ?Book Condition: Good, some foxing, and small upper spine corner stain to 3 pages in the front, Some library marks 'Appalachian Mountain Club' stamps on the inside of the FC and first blank, and in pencil "Gift estate of Ralph Esterquest, 1969", remains of a spine sticker, slight lean. NOTE: Ralph Theodore Esterquest (1912-1968). Obit from 'The Crimson', a Harvard periodical: Ralph T. Esterquest, Harvard's Medical Librarian since 1958, died Saturday at the age of 56. For the past year, he was on a leave of absence from the Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine, during which time he established and organized a Washington, D.C. headquarters for the American Library Association's international office. Frontispiece photographic portrait of Aconcagua, 43 other photographs, photographic panorama from summit of Penitentes, 7 drawn illustrations, 2 fold-out maps, 4 appendices, index. Bound in publisher's brick dark green cloth with gold cover and spine titles. Moderate wear to edges of covers. Moderate to heavy foxing to all page edges. Previous owner bookplate front pastedown. Spotting to frontispiece and title page, scattered spotting to text. Both maps clean and beautiful with only a small crease tear to the large map of Aconcagua. Edward Arthur FitzGerald was an American born Britisher who personally financed and led the 1896-1897 expedition that was the first to summit Aconcagua and Tupungato. Aconcagua, at 22,837 feet, is the highest mountain in all of the Americas. Tupungato is fairly massive as well with a maximum elevation of 21,560 feet. Aconcagua lies entirely within Argentina while Tupungato is on the border between Argentina and Chile. The appendices cover 72 pages and deal with the rock specimens collected in the Andes, notes on fossils collected, the natural history of the Aconcagua Valleys including sections on mammals, birds, reptiles, scorpions and spiders, and plants, and the border dispute between Argentina and Chile.
