A Very Good + set. 12mo., [Vol.1] vii, (i), 349; [Vol.2] 325 pp., illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, both volumes uniformly bound in half blue-green leather and marbled paper over boards. Title in gilt on the four compartment spine, decorated in gilt. All edges marbled, with matching marbled end papers. Light edge wear and rubbing to the tips boards. Spine lightly sunned. Blank end papers nearest the paste downs starting to fox. Text itself is very clean and bright. A handsome set. Thomas Thomson (1773-1852) was a Scottish chemist and mineralogist whose writings contributed to the early spread of Dalton's atomic theory. His scientific accomplishments include the invention of the saccharometer and he gave silicon its current name. He served as president of the Philosophical Society of Glasgow.
