Item description from seller

4to. (26.cm.) 204p. Frontispiece color image of Phalaenopsis Schilleriana in a vase with tissue guard, plus 109 black and white captioned photos, many of them full-age photos, especially of houses and buildings in San Mateo County. Decorated title page. Blue cloth with gilt letters on the front cover. Just touches of wear to extremities with the corners just barely rubbed through, top and bottom of spine showing signs of wanting to fray, cloth clean, gilt bright, frontispiece in fine condition with intact tissue guard, all photos in fine condition, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. Book was found partially disbound. It has been expertly conserved according to current standards using the original case bindiing, but with new Japanese tissue lining (super) in place of the old, removed crash and preserving the original rounded back, with original free endpapers guarded on to the original endpaper pastedowns, and with minor repairs to the endpapers at the hinges. Some cosmetic defects to endpapers due to found condition (see photos) but now a restored, sound volume of a relatively rare book on San Mateo County, California. The contents of this volume are as follows: Part One: A History of SanMateo County, which includes everything from historical notes, to descriptions of resorts, to climate, to the highway system, to schools, to hunting and fishing, and the like; Part Two: Biographies of Representative Men, many with thumbnail photos of the subject; Part Three: Industries; and Part Four: Beautiful Residences, which consists of a series of black and white photos. "San Mateo in its soft, musical pronunciation, still voices memories of the past, when the Franciscan fathers were winding their chain of missions through the Californias." [from the Introduction].
