In full, gilt decorated vellum, with gilt titles and decorations to the spine, front and rear board, number 137 of a limited edition set of 150, with partly untrimmed and uncut page edges. The series was also published in a trade edition and, in 1907, a "popular edition". Featuring early illustrative work by Arthur Rackham, there are a number of tailpieces in which the artist's future style is easily discerned. Original vellum over bevelled boards, spines and covers lettered in gilt with additional pictorial designs, pictorial endpapers, red silk bookmarks (detached), untrimmed edges. Frontispieces and plates with captioned tissue guards. Additional plate loosely inserted (replica of frontispiece). Cover designs, pictorial endpapers, chapter heads and tailpieces by Arthur Rackham. Slight soiling to vellum, as usual, gatherings largely unopened, occasional foxing and light toning, bookmark loose. Pagination: xv, [i], 276pp. Provenance: no inscriptions or bookplates. Approximately 9 ¼ inches tall (23.5cm). Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles and decoration to a plain vellum spine, some darkening to the vellum. Joints very good condition sound. Corners very good condition. Boards very good condition gilt decorated vellum boards. Page edges good condition all untrimmed, darkened the tops. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition sound. Paste downs good condition pictorial paper. End papers good condition pictorial paper. Title good condition lightly tanned. Pages good condition some tanning and foxing but generally clean, many pages uncut. Binding good condition attractive. See photos.
