Illustrated. 267 pages. Unlisted in any golf bibliography, golf plays a major part in this juvenile fiction about students and their sports. Rowing, football, and golf are the characters' main sporting pursuits. Golf illustration on spine and title page, includes a map of the golf links on the Hudson River, golf illustration, etc. Ralph Henry Balfour was a prolific American novelist. The Half-Back is his first novel and is believed to be the only one where golf is highlighted. Published in 1899, golf was beginning to spread across America. Very slight cover wear, slight stain to title page, hinges tight, no internal soiling, creases, tears, etc. Scarce in this condition. Covers protected in mylar. Size: 8vo - over 7�" - 9�" tall.
