FIRST EDITION, 1929. Hardcover. Bound in black publisher's cloth with gilt lettering on the cover and spine. Deckled foredge. Illustrated throughout with artwork by Joseph E. Sandford. Title page is illustrated in black and white, along with its frontispiece. Text is large print. 55 pp. A vintage newspaper clipping is tipped in on the flytitle page, along with a black and white photograph of the author, which is laid in. Illustrated dust jacket is off white with black and red color themes. Protected by a mylar cover. FROM THE DUST JACKET: "In this negro classic Mr. Heyward builds up an atmosphere of horror by his skillful use of dramatic and forceful prose, It is not only a fine story; but it shows also Mr. Heyward's understanding of the primitive negro spirit as shadowed in the South of today." CONDITION: Mild rubbing on the cover. Binding is sound and boards are firmly attached. Leaves have beautifully and evenly toned, virtually free from foxing. Large print is quite dark and easy to read. Illustrations are intriguing. Unmarked. Tipped in vintage newspaper clipping has offset on the flytitle and its adjacent verso page.
