'Witherby' remained the standard reference for almost half a century. The work comprises Vol. I: Crows to Flycatchers (1938); Vol. II: Warblers to Owls (1938); Vol. III: Hawks to Ducks (1939); Vol. IV: Cormorants to Crane (1940); Vol. V: Terns to Game Birds, Additions, Corrections, Systematic List and Indices (1941).
