First Edition, First Printing of this lively biography of one of the least popular figures among outlaws of the frontier West -- federal district court judge Isaac C. Parker AKA The Hanging Judge. Presiding in Fort Smith, Ark. and bent on taming unruly elements in what was originally a vast jurisdiction, Judge Parker issued unsparring sentences and, in capital cases, inclined toward the edifying spectacle of public hangings. Hghlights include an account of the author's encounter with Texas Jack (Nathaniel Reed), reputedly the latest living outlaw to have faced Judge Parker in court. Spoiler alert: Texas Jack was still ornery in his 80s, threatening to "pull down" on Croy over some quibbling about Texas Jack's association with the Jesse Jameses. (Texas Red had known Jesse James Junior but had a penchant for letting listeners infer that his associate was the elder and much more consequential Jesse.) 278 pages, cloth, illustrated. The book has a bit of foxing on the endpapers. The dust jacket has edge wear including a chip at top edge of the back cover.
