This is Priestley's course of thirty-six weekly lectures delivered by Priestley at the New College, Hackney (London), during 1791-94, after which he emigrated to America to join his sons in Pennsylvania. BOOK DETAILS AND CONDITION: First Edition 8vo, cont. marbled boards, rebacked ¼ leather, morocco label (gilt): Endpapers, xxviii, 180 pp (lacks the 4 leaves catalogue of Priestley's book in Neville II pp 338-9 copy). Considerable spotting on title page, else VG int PROVENANCE: From the Arthur C. Greenberg Chemistry History Library. Owner's plate (Edwin Wilkins Field, Hampstead) on inside front cover pastedown. Edwin Wilkins Field (1804-1871) was a lawyer and painter committed to reforming British law. As a Unitarian Dissenter, his interest in Priestley may have to do with Priestley's role as a co-founder of British Universalism. One of Field's bookplates is in the collection of the British Museum.
