Octavo, vii, [i], 286pp, [2], title-page vignette and 18 woodcut illustration, 4 by George Cruikshank, and 3 by his brother Robert, 2 folding etched scenes, all of sporting life, in publisher s dark green pebbled cloth, spine with gilt cartouche and titling (small spot rubbed through along upper joint, mild wear at corners, mild foxing within, but heavier foxing to 2 folding plates, very good or better). Berenger was popular within sporting circles, also convicted of stock fraud in 1814, spending a year in prison. Later he rebound financially, establishing The Stadium, or British National Arena for the purposes of public fairs and events, as well as a place for shooting and archery clubs. Provenance: Contemporaneous bookplate and ownership signature of Philip John Budworth, Greenstead Hall Essex, with additional bookplate of author and bibliophile Eric S. Quayle of Greensleeves, Sutton Coldfield dated 1962, both at front paste-down. British writer, historian, and bibliophile Eric Quayle amassed a library of over 12,000 books and produced a series of lavishly illustrated books on book collecting, as well as a biography of 19th century adventure story writer R. M. Ballantyne.
