A very scarce first edition of this account of the life of John Ellerthorpe, a British ferryman and foreman of the Humber Dock Gates. First edition. Very scarce. With a portrait frontispiece. The life of John Ellerthorpe, an English seafarer whose career took him across the world. He is recorded as having saved the lives of thirty-nine people, including those of his father and his son. Some rescues took place in the Humber, where he was foreman of the dock gates, and others as far away as Quebec. Written by the Reverend Henry Woodcock, an English minister and author. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the board. Small split in the cloth to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound with a 1" closed tear to the title page at the hinge. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and minor age toning to the extremities. Contemporary ink inscriptions to the front endpaper with previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Good. Seller Inventory # 921T102
