Edward Arthur FitzGerald was an American born Britisher who personally financed and led the 1896-1897 expedition that was the first to summit Aconcagua and Tupungato. Aconcagua, at 22,837 feet, is the highest mountain in all of the Americas. Tupungato is fairly massive as well with a maximum elevation of 21,560 feet. Aconcagua lies entirely within Argentina while Tupungato is on the border between Argentina and Chile. The appendices cover 72 pages and deal with the rock specimens collected in the Andes, notes on fossils collected, the natural history of the Aconcagua Valleys including sections on mammals, birds, reptiles, scorpions and spiders, and plants, and the border dispute between Argentina and Chile.
