Very Good. During the restoration of this copy, it was bound tightly. Second Edition. The second edition contains "some alterations and much new matter" (Preface to Second Edition, p. 7). The first edition, published in 1861, was entitled Hints on the Preservation of Health in Armies, for the Use of Volunteer Officers and Soldiers. Freemon, in his Microbes and Minie-Balls (p. 105), writes this about the first edition: "This brief survey of military hygiene is especially interesting because it was completed in May 1861--before the start of hostilities. The main stimulus for the work was the British finding that soldiers of their peacetime army were twice as likely to die of disease as civilian men of the same age. Ordronaux bases most of the work on the study of European publications. European measures, such as kilograms, are sometimes used, and European military ideas are frequently expressed, such as different physical qualifications for riflemen and 'infantry of the line'. There are chapters on marching, on camp cleanliness, on food, and on clothing. . . . An appendix includes the official report of a U.S. Army Board . . . convened to decide whether the army should rely on two-wheeled or four-wheeled ambulances." Ordronaux "received an Hon. M.D. from Columbian University (D.C.) in 1859. On the breaking out of the Civil War he was made examining surgeon for volunteers in Brooklyn, and in 1864 was appointed assistant surgeon of the 15th Regiment, National Guards, State of New York. During his services in these capacities he published the first American work on military hygiene, "Hints on Health in Armies" [offered here], and also a "Manual for Military Surgeons on the Examination of Recruits and Discharge of Soldiers" (Kelly & Burrage, American Medical Biographies, 1920, p. 865).".
