16x10 cm. Contemporary full leather with morocco spine labels and five raised bands, front joint weak, front board well rubbed, ends of spine bumped. Internally very good to near fine with Franklin Institute blind stamp on title page. half-title, [2], [30], 400, [70] pp. Third edition, the first known edition having been published in 1716. The text describes the origin of commerce, traffic by money and by exchanges, the history of sea trade including discussion of the Ishmaelites and Midianites, Egyptians, Phoenicians, Indians, Chinese, Persians, Arabs, Ethiopians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, England, Gaul, Spain, Germany, Scandinavia, Muscovy, Italy, maritime routes, piracy etc. "Pierre-Daniel Huet composed this book at the request of Colbert. He inserted many curious and learned digressions. Perhaps the Bishop of Avranches did not put the finishing touches to this work. It was judged by name by the style, less refined than in the other productions of the same author" (Michaud) - Polak, 4540 - Kress, 6110.
