Legatura ottocentesca in mezza pergamena con angoli, piatti in carta percalinata, doppio tassello sul dorso ornato da fregi dorati. Con 22 splendide illustrazioni, anche di grandi dimensioni, incise su rame, quella al front. del vol. I è firmata Frankendaad; la figura Priapica a p. 195 del I vol. è intatta, non è stata censurata. Lievissime ed insignificanti ossidazioni marginali su pochissime pp. ma esemplare in ottimo stato di conservazione, ancora completamente in barbe. Prima edizione della fondamentale traduzione francese, eseguita da Jean Baptiste Robinet e Gottfried Sellius, di questo manifesto dell' arte neoclassica, in cui il famoso antiquario tedesco difende l' ideale della bellezza greca, fondamentale per la codificazione del gusto neoclassico e per le successive elaborazioni dell' estetica idealista. "This was indeed the first work in the German language to achieve universal acclaim. Winckelmann had drawn attention for the first time to the importance of Greek ideals for the modern world, and, with his unique acquaintance with the surviving examples of classical art, amplified by wide and specialized reading, his authority was unquestioned."
