The first edition of the second volume of this curious 18th century miscellany by Thomas Gent, combining Roman history with Yorkshire antiquarianism, illustrated throughout with woodcuts. In a later calf binding, rebacked with modern calf. Endpapers renewed. First edition. Volume II only. Volume 1 seems extremely scarce. A scarce copy of this history of Rome by the celebrated York printer and antiquary Thomas Gent, with a wide-ranging miscellany of antiquarian, biographical, theological, and local historical material. Illustrated throughout with numerous charming woodcut vignettes, including figures, city prospects, and ecclesiastical scenes. The text surveys the Roman emperors and principal events of classical history, interspersed with digressive essays, moral reflections, inscriptions, and accounts of notable figures and places. Of particular interest is the extensive appendix concerning York and Yorkshire, commemorating prominent local personages and recording antiquarian curiosities connected with the county. Thomas Gent (1693-1778) was one of the most distinctive provincial printers of the eighteenth century, best remembered for his histories of York, Ripon, and Hull.
