About this Item
1836. First edition. [vi], 229pp., 1 page of errata, 12 engraved plates (including a vignette title page), and a plan of the harbour of Dundee (left hand edge slightly trimmed). This is a scarce 180 year old history of the town of Dundee. The author provides a description of the contents in his introduction as follows: "It comprises a brief account of the Roman invasion by Lollius Urbicus, tracing the ancient history of Dundee down to the present time, interspersed 3with biographical anecdotes of those whose actions have rendered them conspicuous in the locasl history of the place. The latter pasrt of the volume has been devoted to the modern historical description of Dundee, its buildings, the arts, sciences, manufactures, extent of its shipping, exports, imports, &c. The whole being illustrated with twelve engravings on steel, on the most interesting subjects connecterd with the town and environs." The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling and gold stamped coat of arms of Dundee on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some expected signs of its age. There is shelf wear with some soiling on the boards and some bubbling to the cloth on the front board. The spine ends and corners are bumped with a little damage to the cloth on the corner tips and both spine ends. The spine has been tight bound onto the text block, probably by a previous owner. The contents are tight and the book has been given new endpapers at some time (probably late 20th century). The pages are clean apart from a few marks from finger smudges, etc., mostly near the start of the book. There is a little light foxing on the first and last few pages although the vignette title page is more heavily affected. There is light foxing around the edges of the other plates and the left hand side of the plan at the end of the book appears to have been slightly ttrimmed. There are small tears on the fore edge of some of the last pages of the book (some repaired) and page 227 has a larger repaired tear of about 3" on the fore edge. A name has been written on the reverse of the plain title page. PLEASE NOTE: Heavyish and expensive book so a little extra may be needed for tracked shipping to non-UK customers.
