Tan printed wrappers bound into later red cloth. 8vo. 62pp. Duplicate copy from New York Public Library with small stamps on cover and 2 other pages. A history of this Rhode Island town from its incorporation in 1743 to 1876. There is much information on: Ann Hutchinson and the Antinomian crisis in New England; their move to Rhode Island in the 1600's; the Pocasset settlement; religious freedom in the Providence Plantations; George Berkeley and his time in Middletown; decriptions of early Newport; Newport divided into two towns; the importance of agriculture in the area; the 1740's incorporation of Middletown; the Sachuest Beach controversy and Easton's lands; early political struggles; the French and Indian War and Middletown volunteers; the small pox epidemics; the American Revolution and British occupation; problems with colonial currency; immigration to the town; local delegates to the Constitutional Convention; early buildings in the town; the War of 1812 and the Nimrod affair; state constitution efforts in the 1840's; the Civil War; rising population figures; and much more. An appendix contains a complete list of town officials from the 1700's on. This is a very good copy with some light foxing to the covers and the first few pages.
