First edition. In publisher's dark blue cloth over bevel edged boards, gilt lettered and decorated cover and spine, swan patterned end papers. Top edge uncut, fore edge rough cut and bottom edge cut. Frontispiece of two full page color plates depicting the front and back of the Sherd of Amenartus. First issue with four spelling mistakes, on p. 59 "geneleman" for gentleman; p 126, line 26 "had" for have; p 258 line 37; "it compared" instead of if compared; p 269 line 38 "godness me" instead of goodness. Scott 5 : Whatmore F4. London: Longmans, Green, And Co. (1887) 317 pages + 2 pages of ads at rear. VG: Spots of color repair work to extremities, and to a scratch on back cover, possible repair work to hinge, other age wear. Clean interior with neatly affixed bookplate to front paste down.
