Original gilt-decorated green cloth. Folio. xii, 263, (1), 3, (1), 5pp ads. Illustrated with frontispiece plus 5 full page engravings, one folding color map of the Champagne vineyards and hundreds of smaller wood engravings throughout the text. An important reference work by the British publisher and author. While a correspondent in Europe for the London Illustrated News, Vizetelly became an authority on wines and served as a wine juror at the Vienna and Paris exhibitions. In the preface he notes that "he has paid frequent visits to the Champagne- to its vineyards and vendangeoirs, and to the establishments of the chief manufacturers of sparkling wine, the preparation of which he has witnessed in all its phases". A good copy with some scuffing to the rear cover, a split to the left side of the spine near the top and some fraying to the spine tips. The text and plates are very good with some light soiling and wear. The inner hinges have been reinforced with clear tape and the first few pages (including the frontis) are slightly sprung from the binding. The contents have been collated and are complete.
