I am pleased to be able to offer a two volume set titled: "History of the City of New York- Its Origin, Rise, and Progress. Volume I covers the period prior to the Revolution, closing in 1774 and Volume II, embraces the Century of National Independence, closing in 1880. These books have been rebound in polished calf leather quarter spines with protected leather corners and marbled paper boards, and with gilt titles on the spine. This is the illustrated edition and the books include 16 full-page engravings, another 131 illustrations in text, and 7 maps.
Condition: These books are in very good condition. In both cases, the leather quarter spines have been rubbed, bumped and scraped, Volume I moreso than Volume II. There has also been some rubbing to the finish of the marbled papers of the boards. The leather of the gutters is clearly dry and perhaps a bit brittle but is still holding tight. The spine appear a bit dry as well with some wear to the leather and its gilt titles and decorations, but again, largely intact. Inside, the books are unmarked and the pages and plates are bright and clean throughout, without toning or foxing. There are some slight incidences of soiling but nothing extreme at all. All the hinges are intact and the bindings are tight and sound. These books are not ex-library or remainders.
