Although his education was frequently interrupted by ill-health, his knowledge was far-reaching. After a brief undergraduate career at Magdalen College, Oxford, he studied Latin, Greek & French at Lausanne. It was in Rome in 1764 that Gibbon first conceived of his grand historical project, of which the first volume was published in 1776 & the last in 1788.
