First edition.In a contemporary half calf binding, with renewed endpapers.Engraved portrait frontispiece, after a drawing by Howard from the last bust by Nollekens in the possession of Lord Holland.A history of England during the first year of James II's reign (1685), written by Whig MP Charles James Fox. It was left unfinished at his death in 1806.Part of Fox's motive in writing it was to correct theToryinterpretation ofDavid Hume'sHistory of England, who Fox considered to be "an excellent man and of great powers of mind, but his Partiality to Kings and Princes is intolerable"Fox was a prominent British Whig statesman whose parliamentary career spanned thirty-eight years and who was particularly noted for being the arch-rival of William Pitt the Younger. In a contemporary half calf binding.Externally, with rubbing to the extremities and cracking to the joints, which are strained. Damp stains and marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound.
