Bound in dark grey blind stamped cloth. Gilt lettering to spine 'History of England by Hume and Smollett. Edges are bumped and front top corner is bent. Small damage to spine and wear to shoulders. Front hinge beginning to crack. Binding is otherwise very good for a book of 1354 pp, plus a long unpaginated index. Pages are age tanned with foxing to front prelims. Previous owner's book plate on fep. A huge work of historical research, combining David Hume's six volume study up to 1688, finished in 1762, and completed by Tobias Smollett in 1820. With a memoir by Hume composed shortly before his death in 1776 and a letter by Adam Smith. 4to. Please enquire about postage as this book is heavy.
