The first edition of Sismondi's history of the Roman Empire, and part of the Cabinet Cyclopaedia. The first edition. Complete in two volumes. Uniformly bound in half calf. Each volume has an engraved title page. A comprehensive history of the fall of the Roman Empire, with additional reference to the invasion and settlement of the barbarians. This work is part of the Cabinet Cyclopaedia. Jean Charles Leonard de Sismondi was a Swiss historian and political economist, best known for his historical publications. He was a pioneering advocate for unemployment insurance, sickness benefits, pensions and regulated working hours. His work was popular among socialists, earning him critical commentary in the Communist Manifesto. In a half calf binding. Externally, with rubbing to the extremities and marks to the boards. Spines are darkened. Small crack to the upper joint of volume one. Cracks to the joints of volume two. Hinges are strained, more so to the front. Spine label is missing from volume two. Scattered spots to the rear free endpapers and light offsetting to the edges of the paste-downs and free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age-toned but otherwise very bright and clean with just the odd spot throughout. Spotting heavier to the title pages. Good Only. Seller Inventory # 845g25
