George Grote was a prominent English banker and historian who wrote this extensive work in the mid-19th century. This volume of Grote's masterpiece primarily covers the epic march and retreat of the Ten Thousand Greeks (Anabasis of Cyrus the Younger), detailing their perilous journey from Persia back to the Black Sea, interactions with various peoples, and subsequent involvement in Greek politics, especially during the rise of Sparta and the Corinthian War, concluding around the Peace of Antalkidas (387 BCE).
552pp including 2a pull out map and 22pp list of other works. 16 x 23cm.
The original cloth binding is visibly worn, with a faded spine and apparent fraying or tearing along the top and bottom edges and seams. Minor edge wear. The blind-stamped decoration on the boards is visible, but the cloth color has darkened and faded with age. The gold lettering on the spine is largely intact and still legible. "Mechanics Wexford Institute" stamp visible on the title page with previous owner signature on inside page and title page, Le Hunte. Immediate inner pages have foxing. However overall very good internally and pages are generally clear. Contains maps. Photos reflect quality and more can be provided by contacting the seller.
