About this Item

Volume I only of the first edition from 1784 of the third and fourth volumes of this history. The first two volumes were originally published in 1779. Contemporary full leather binding with five raised bands to the spine which has gilt decorations. This binding matches the binding on another from the same family collection which I also have for sale but as that is volume I of from the 1782 edition of the first two volumes of the History it seems pointless to try and group them together without the other two volumes even though they were probably originally bound as a four volume set. The title panel is present and the volume number is gilt stamped on the spine below this. The spine has chipping at the top and bottom. There is light cracking to the edges but the binding is firm and secure. The corners are bumped with some rubbing and fraying. There is a half-inch gouged dent towards the top right corner of the front panel and some light surface wear to the front and rear panels. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown - Margaretta Phillipina Wale of Shelford near Cambridge - with the name of another family member - Lady Wale - on the front free endpaper and another family name at the top of the title page. Spotting and some browning around the edges of the endpapers. There is light browning to the pages with some spots and marks in a few places but the pages are otherwise generally unmarked.
